The Work Capacity Certificate

The Ministry of Education and Culture and the National Board of Education have together developed a Work Capacity Certificate. The Cultural and Sports Association of Finnish Vocational Education and Training SAKU is responsible for coordinating the Work Capacity Certificate, supporting the work done by education providers and disseminating best practices developed by different organisations.

Partners are needed in studying for a sustainable way of life

According to national core curriculum, schools must raise environmentally aware citizens who are committed to a sustainable way of life and who are able to create social, cultural and economic wellbeing without diminishing biodiversity and natural resources and without exceeding the capacity of the natural environment.

Student body activities

The Finnish National Board of Education organised a training event called Student body activities – the key to active citizenship in Helsinki, Finland in September 7, 2006 (Oppilaskuntatoiminta – avain aktiiviseen kansalaisuuteen in Finnish). Among other things, the training event offered the possibility to discuss good practices of student body activities in basic education, upper secondary education and in vocational education and training. Teachers participating in this training event discussed in small groups the potential, challenges and good practices of student body activities in different educational structures.

New National Core Curricula

The National Board of Education has confirmed a new framework curriculum for comprehensive education. The national framework curriculum forms the basis for drawing up local curricula, which is usually done by municipalities. The new curriculum must be in use in comprehensive schools by 1 August 2006. The new upper secondary school framework curriculum will be adopted simultaneously in all Finnish upper secondary schools on 1 August 2005.

Couch potatoes and exercise enthusiasts

Finnish National Board of Education evaluated the learning outcomes of comprehensive school 9th graders in physical education. Attitudes towards the subject were very positive among pupils. Yet, one fifth of them were categorised as couch potatoes for whom the only regular form of exercise was physical education at school.

Entrepreneurship in Vocational Education and Training Intended for Young People

All 53 National Core Curricula and Requirements of Competence-based Qualifications issued for different upper secondary vocational qualifications determine entrepreneurship in terms of both internal and external entrepreneurship according to the vocational skills requirements of the relevant field.

The spread of obesity is a cause of concern everywhere in Europe. Overweight in Finnish children has also increased significantly in the past decades. The Consumer Agency, the Consumer Ombudsman and the National Public Health Institute have published a guide for advertisers to use when planning marketing of foodstuffs to children.
